Can you benefit from a bodybuilding lifestyle if you have diabetes? You sure can. As a matter of fact, there are many benefits that bodybuilding offers, besides a better looking physique, that will enhance the quality of life of a person fighting diabetes. Better insulin sensitivity, improved blood sugar utilization, less insulin injections (for those who are insulin dependent), and more stable energy levels are just some of the benefits that bodybuilding can offer to the diabetes patient.

Benefits of Bodybuilding on Diabetes

Diabetes comes in two forms; type 1 (insulin dependent: the pancreas fails to produce insulin) and type 2 (non-insulin dependent people with poor insulin sensitivity). It seems that people with type 2 diabetes (around 90% of diabetic cases) benefit most from bodybuilding training as insulin sensitivity is increased and therefore the problem that causes it is attacked directly. People with type 1 however also benefit as most see a decreased amount in the insulin that they need to take each day.

Insulin Sensitivity and Glucose Tolerance can be improved Approximately 90% of diabetic cases are due to type 2 diabetes. People with this type of diabetes can largely benefit from bodybuilding as it can result in an increase of insulin sensitivity, therefore the problem which causes diabetes is immediately under attack. Of course it is beneficial for those people with type 1 diabetes also as it decreases the amount of insulin that is required by their bodies in order to manage their levels of glucose.

Lifting weights can stabilize your blood sugar the same way as “aerobic exercise,” maybe easier, because as you build muscle and lose body fat,  this raises your metabolism, so you’re always burning energy.Lifting weights may also help your body respond to insulin.  It can also lower blood glucose and possibly reduce the amount of medication you need to treat diabetes, or even in some Type 2
Diabetics, exercise combined with a proper meal plan, can eliminate the need for medication. Lifting weights can improve your circulation, especially in your arms and legs, where people with diabetes can have problems.

Strength training is one of the most rigorous training workouts that you can experience. All the work that you put forth during a bodybuilding workout benefits you in several different ways. By performing bodybuilding exercises just a few days each week you can increase your stamina and metabolism, and build lean, strong muscles. The metabolic changes will happen naturally. To sculpt your muscles you will need to use specific equipment. The equipment you need to use depends on the muscles you want to redefine.
